(Care Sheets are a simplified look at keeping snakes, for a more complete guide consult the relevant book in our book store)

General: Copperheads are a stout bodied snake with broad light brown to gray cross bands. They average between 22 and 36 inches with the record being 53 inches. Copperheads are found throughout the Central and Eastern United States right from Kansas to Connecticut and Western Texas to Florida.

Enclosure: Juvenile Copperheads can be housed in a 10 Gallon Tank and adults in a 40 Gallon Tank, Remember space is needed to work with the snake.

Substrate: Newsprint and astroturf are the best for your Copperhead. One does not want to be searching for a venomous snake under other substrates like bark or cypress mulch although these (not Cedar) can be used if the snake is for display purposes.

Temperature and Humidity: Copperheads do well in a Moderate humidity of about 50% and the temperature in the warm side of the vivarium should be between 27 and 33 degrees C (81-91F).

Feeding: Hatchling Copperheads can be fed an appropriate sized pinky every 5-6 days and adults can be fed appropriately sized mice every 7-10 days. Always use feeding tongs when feeding copperheads, they are venomous.

Cleaning: Clean the enclosure thoroughly once a month and remove faeces as it appears (carefully) and always have fresh water available.
